For centuries windows were made of timber. Today we can see wood window examples that have stood the test of time, from Victorian back-to-backs to fine period homes dating as far back as the 15th century.

Following the second world war there was a shortage of timber and less durable species were used for window manufacture. This, coupled with design simplification and blind automation, meant that timber windows performed badly and were prone to rot, warping and splitting. Builders and homeowners then favoured windows made from alternative materials such as plastic and metal. However, they too suffered thermal and maintenance problems.

Encompass of North Yorkshire spent five years going back to basics. With a totally open mind they took the best of the old and engineered it to use effective double glazing, security hardware and the ability to give any finish, timber species or window design to suit your taste, your home and even your furniture. Painting or staining is all done in the factory, reducing the time that your house is vulnerable during fitting. Timber was chosen as it gave excellent thermal insulation characteristics, an ability to reproduce any traditional window style and a wide choice of colour and finish. Encompass carefully selects wood species to give the rot free stability required for engineered windows. In addition, Encompass is able to use the 100% rot free Accoya treated wood for added confidence in all their timber windows.

Encompass of North Yorkshire also supply timber doors and interior architectural details such as architraves, skirting boards, dados and picture rails to match your choice of windows, giving a fully co-ordinated house. Although now seen almost as a unique buyer benefit, this was precisely the effect achieved in period properties, from the workman’s cottage to the stately home.
